Learn the mechanics

Five terms that decide whether a card is worth its fee. Learn these and the rankings above become obvious.
Annual Percentage Rate (APR)The yearly interest rate charged on any balance you carry past your due date, expressed as a percentage. Indian card issuers typically charge this monthly (often 3-3.99%), which compounds to a much higher effective annual rate.A monthly rate of 3.5% is a 42% nominal annual rate, but compounds to a roughly 51% effective annual rate if a balance is carried for a full year.
Grace periodThe interest-free window between your statement date and payment due date, usually 18-50 days, during which you pay no interest on new purchases if the previous statement balance was paid in full.Miss the due date by even one day and the grace period is void — interest is then charged retroactively from the transaction date on the entire outstanding balance, not just the unpaid part.
Lounge access capA limit on how many complimentary airport lounge visits a card offers per quarter or year, and often a minimum quarterly spend threshold that must be met to unlock or keep those visits.A card advertising 'unlimited domestic lounge access' may still require ₹1 lakh+ of spend in the prior quarter to actually qualify.
Fuel surcharge waiverA refund (usually 1% of the transaction, capped monthly) of the surcharge fuel pumps add on card payments, credited back as a statement adjustment rather than skipped at the pump.A waiver capped at ₹250/month stops helping once your monthly fuel spend crosses roughly ₹25,000, since the surcharge saved beyond that isn't refunded.
Milestone benefitA bonus reward — extra points, a voucher, or a fee waiver — triggered once cumulative spend on the card crosses a set threshold within a defined period, on top of the regular per-transaction rewards rate.Spending ₹3 lakh in a card year might unlock a ₹3,000 milestone voucher — separate from and additional to whatever points you already earned on those transactions.
