Best first credit cards
For someone getting their first card: entry-tier cards only, led by fee simplicity (free beats cheap beats expensive). A high but narrow reward rate doesn't override that.
How we judged this
- · Pool is restricted to cards tagged entry-tier in our catalog — this list is deliberately not about the objectively 'best' card, but the easiest sensible first one.
- · Fee simplicity dominates the score: lifetime-free cards score highest, followed by low-fee cards, scaled down as the stated fee rises.
- · Reward rate contributes only a small, capped bonus — a narrow, merchant-specific high percentage (e.g. a co-branded bill-payment rate) can't outweigh fee simplicity here the way it might on other lists.

What would change this ranking
A new entry-tier card launches at ₹0 lifetime free with a genuinely broad (not merchant-locked) reward rate.
A bank converts an entry-tier card's fee structure from lifetime-free to spend-waived.
A card's minimum income/eligibility criteria tighten enough that it's no longer realistic as a genuine first card.
