Learn the mechanics

Five terms that decide whether a card is worth its fee. Learn these and the rankings become obvious.

Fee waiver thresholdAn annual fee is only real if you miss the spend target that cancels it. Miss it by a rupee and you pay all of it.Infinia waives at ₹10 lakh a year. Atlas offers no waiver at any spend.
Monthly capsA headline rate with a ceiling. Once you cross it the card pays nothing extra for the rest of the cycle. This is how Swiggy HDFC's advertised 10% settles nearer 3% for most holders.
Effective returnTotal rewards minus the fee you actually pay, divided by everything you spent. The only number that compares two cards honestly.A 5% card with a ₹5,000 monthly cap returns less than a flat 2% card above ₹1L of spend.
Excluded categoriesRent, wallet loads, fuel and often utilities earn nothing, and some now carry a surcharge. Route them off your reward card entirely.ICICI added a 1% surcharge on wallet loads above ₹5,000 in January.
Devaluation and revaluationSchedules move both ways. A cap on redemption is a devaluation even when the earn rate is untouched.41 changes logged this year — six of them in the cardholder's favour.
