Credit Card Rating & Valuation Methodology
Transparent, objective, and mathematically reproducible. Zero subjective bias.
Updated: September 2026
Unlike conventional finance portals that assign subjective ratings influenced by commercial affiliate payouts, CredSutra scores every credit card using a strict 5-pillar mathematical model. Our scoring algorithm penalizes restrictive caps, unannounced devaluations, and predatory dynamic currency conversion fees.
1. The 5 Weighted Evaluation Pillars
Base Reward Yield
Measures the guaranteed return on everyday, general retail spending in India. We exclude common zero-reward categories (fuel, wallet loads, rent, utilities, government payments, and jewelry) from the baseline to calculate true usable yield.
Accelerated Portals & Multipliers
Evaluates partner multipliers (e.g. HDFC SmartBuy, Axis GrabDeals, Tata Neu, AmEx Reward Multiplier). We heavily deduct points for unrealistically tight monthly caps (such as 1,000 pts/month limits) that stifle high spenders.
Airport Lounge Hurdles & Usability
Analyzes both domestic and international lounge allowances. Cards enforcing quarterly spend gates (e.g. ₹50,000–₹1,00,000 in preceding quarter) receive calibrated penalties relative to unconditional complimentary access.
Fee Break-Even & Milestone Feasibility
Calculates the exact spending volume required to waive the annual renewal fee. Cards whose waiver milestone exceeds 100x their annual fee are heavily penalized, while genuine Lifetime Free (LTF) cards earn positive base multipliers.
Forex Markup, DCC & Auxiliary Perks
Assesses foreign currency markup (0% vs 3.5% standard), DCC transaction surcharges, complimentary golf access, concierge responsiveness, and comprehensive air accident or lost luggage insurance coverage.
2. The 0–10 Algorithmic Verdict & 5-Star Scale
Each pillar is scored from 0 to 10 points based on quantitative benchmarks. The composite score translates directly into our consumer verdict:
| Score | Stars | Verdict | Portfolio Recommendation |
|---|---|---|---|
| 9.0 – 10.0 | ★★★★★ (4.8 – 5.0) | Exceptional (Flagship Category Leader) | Must-have card in portfolio if eligible. |
| 7.5 – 8.9 | ★★★★☆ (4.0 – 4.7) | Strong (High-Utility Contender) | Recommended for targeted spending categories. |
| 5.5 – 7.4 | ★★★☆☆ (3.0 – 3.9) | Average (Mediocre Economics) | Viable only if annual fee waiver is guaranteed. |
| Below 5.5 | ★★☆☆☆ (< 3.0) | Poor (High Cost / Low Yield) | Avoid or cancel; superior alternatives available. |
3. Dynamic Devaluation Degradation
A static rating is obsolete within six months in India’s fast-shifting credit landscape. Whenever an issuing bank announces a devaluation (such as lounge spend gate additions or reward caps):
- The event is verified and logged in our Devaluation Tracker within 48 hours.
- The affected card’s pillar scores (Lounge Usability, Accelerated Yield) are immediately degraded.
- A prominent warning banner is deployed across the card’s Decision Workspace linking to our analytical briefing.
4. Independence & Non-Advisory Status
Our mathematical scoring engine operates with absolute commercial independence:
- No Pay-for-Rankings: Issuers cannot pay to boost a card’s score, verdict, or position in category rankings.
- Non-Lender & Non-DSA: CredSutra is not a bank or lending agent. All card applications are processed on official issuer portals.
- General Information: Calculations represent model simulations and do not constitute personalized financial planning advice.
